Indianapolis International Airport (IATA: IND, ICAO: KIND, FAA LID: IND) is an international airport located 11 kilometers southwest of downtown Indianapolis in Marion County, Indiana.

It is owned and operated by the Indianapolis Airport Authority. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) categorized it as a medium hub primary commercial service facility.

The airport occupies 7,700 acres in Wayne andDecatur townships in Marion County and Guilford Township in Hendricks County. In terms of cargo traffic, it is the second-largest FedEx Express hub in the world after the FedEx Hub in Memphis, Tennessee.

History of Indianapolis International Airport

Indianapolis International Airport (IND) has been making history since 1928 when its current site was selected by city leaders.

Officially opening in 1931 as Indianapolis Municipal Airport, the  facility has grown from a very small terminal on 400 acres to today’s size, which includes a new, world-class terminal.

In 2008, the board named the new main passenger facility the Col. H. Weir Cook Terminal and the new entrance road Col. H. Weir Cook Memorial Drive.

Today, many companies offering car rental, shuttle bus, hotel courtesy vehicles, and other transportation services such as IndyGo bus service can be obtained at the Ground Transportation Center on the first floor of the facility.

All pick-ups and drop-offs of vehicles also occur at the Ground Transportation Center. Additionally, the airport has a five-floor parking garage for passengers traveling with their vehicles.

In 2020, more than 4 million passengers passed through this airport. Its busiest domestic routes for the same period include Atlanta, Georgia, Denver, Colorado, Orlando, Florida, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Texas, Chicago–O'Hare, Illinois, Charlotte, North Carolina, Vegas, Nevada, Phoenix–Sky Harbor, Arizona, Tampa, Florida, and Fort Myers, Florida.

Indianapolis International Airport sits 243 meters above sea level at 39°43′02″N and 86°17′40″W. It has two parallel runways (5L/23R and 5R/23L) and a crosswind runway (14/32).

The Indianapolis Union Station is approximately 13 miles away from the airport near downtown Indianapolis, Indiana.

This train station is served by Amtrak's Cardinal line, passing through Indianapolis three times weekly.

It has routes to New York Penn Station and Chicago Union Station, with major intermediate stops at Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Charlottesville, Charleston, Huntington, Cincinnati, and Indianapolis.
